News 12 recently reported that a ceiling collapsed in a Brooklyn home after the long-term tenant had complained repeatedly about leaks to property management. The tenant said that the New York City Department of Housing and Preservation and Development noted 15 violations in the rental property. Reporters from News 12 reached out to the building’s management company, but they did not respond to their requests for comment.
About the Ceiling Collapse
The ceiling collapsed in the Flatbush home due to ongoing water damage that may have accumulated for years. The tenant says she feels scared and unsafe because of the ceiling collapse.
History of the Problem
The tenant says that she has lived in the rental property for seven years, She said that water leas from the ceiling, pools on the ground, and goes into the shower. There is even debris left in the inside of her tub due to the problem. Water also infiltrates the walls of her kitchen and bedroom and causes cracks in the walls.
The tenant said she has been dealing with the leak for four years. She has complained about it repeatedly to the landlord. However, the landlord has allegedly only responded to the problem by sending someone in to make a temporary fix. Before long, the problem will emerge again and the same temporary fix will be applied without addressing the underlying problem. While the ceiling was temporarily boarded up, she worries that the same problem will continue. She is currently looking into her tenant rights and considering taking legal action against her landlord through a lawsuit.
