Broken Bones In Slip And Fall Accidents Attorneys in New York City

In need of a Slip And Fall Broken Bones Attorney in New York City?

A broken bone or fracture is the injury a fall victim is most likely to suffer. Falls often cause shoulder and forearm fractures, spine fractures, pelvic fractures and hip fractures, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) says. Read on to learn more about broken bones in slip & fall cases.

Broken Bones in Slip & Fall Cases

Many falls that cause broken bones result from hazards such as slippery or wet surfaces, poor lighting and cluttered walkways. Too often, property owners neglect these hazardous conditions, and innocent people suffer the result of slipping or tripping and falling.

Property owners or managers may be held liable when their negligence causes broken bones or other injuries in falls. An experienced NYC slip & fall lawyer from David Resnick & Associates, P.C., can help you get full and fair compensation if you or a loved one has been injured in a fall in New York City.

Fractures are Frequent Injuries in Falls

Falling onto the ground, floor or pavement is one of the most frequent causes of broken bones. Broken bones from falls are the most common injuries in children who fall during play – the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says 45 percent of playground injuries are fractures – and in young men engaged in sports and recreation. Older adults are also highly susceptible to severe injury from falls. Falls that result in injuries such as fractures are also the most common workplace injuries.

A bone may be completely fractured or partially fractured in any number of ways (crosswise, lengthwise, or in multiple places), the AAOS explains.

Fractures are repaired by putting the broken pieces back into position and preventing them from moving out of place until they are healed. Depending on the severity of the fracture, this may require a brace or splint, cast, traction (a system of weights that slowly pulls shattered bones back into place) or placing metal pins or screws into the bones while they heal, a process known as “fixation.” Fixation may be external or internal, the latter of which requires surgery.

Fractures take several weeks to several months to heal, depending on the extent of the injury, the AAOS says. A person with a broken bone will likely lose muscle strength in the injured area, but specific exercises can help to restore normal muscle strength, joint motion and flexibility.

Fractures in Falls Among the Elderly

The CDC states that “falls are a threat to the health and independence of older adults and can significantly limit their ability to remain self-sufficient.” An injury from a fall can increase the risk of early death in a person who is 65 years old or older.

Most fractures among older adults are caused by falls, the CDC says. A hip fracture is the most frequent type of fall-related fracture among the elderly, but fractures of the spine, forearm, leg, ankle, pelvis, upper arm and hand are also common.

Over 95 percent of hip fractures are caused by falls, according to the CDC. In 2010, there were 258,000 hip fractures. The rate for women was almost twice the rate for men.

The AAOS says approximately 25 percent of hip fracture patients will make a full recovery, 40 percent will require nursing home admission, 50 percent will be dependent upon a cane or a walker, and 20 percent will die within one year of the fall.

These statistics explain why we at David Resnick & Associates, P.C., take fall accidents that result in broken bones so seriously. They result in pain and medical expenses, disrupt people’s lives and, in many cases, change or even shorten the victim’s life.
