Texting Behind the Wheel is Like Driving Blind

Drivers are 23 times more likely to crash if they use a cell phone or portable electronic device for texting while driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In a famous 2010 experiment, Car and Driver magazine conducted safety tests at an abandoned airstrip. The researchers found that texting diverts a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. This is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field blindfolded at 55 mph.

Yet more than a third of all drivers (37 percent) say they have sent or received text messages while driving, according to a Healthday poll. Eighteen percent say they do it regularly.
